Disney Signs Three-Year Content Licensing Deal With OpenAI for Sora

Disney has entered into a new licensing agreement with OpenAI, becoming the first major content partner for Sora, OpenAI’s video generation model.

Under the three-year deal, Sora will be permitted to generate short, user-prompted social videos that feature Disney-owned characters, according to the company.

What the Agreement Covers

The licensing arrangement allows Sora to draw on a catalog of more than 200 characters spanning Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars properties. Fans will be able to create and share short-form videos generated from text prompts, with the content designed specifically for social viewing.

Disney said the agreement enables OpenAI’s model to use approved characters within defined creative and distribution limits, positioning the partnership as a controlled expansion of generative video tied to major entertainment franchises.

Why It Matters

The deal marks the first time Disney has licensed its core character portfolio to a generative AI video platform. For OpenAI, the partnership provides high-profile, legally licensed content for Sora as it moves toward broader use. For Disney, it represents a cautious step into AI-generated media while retaining control over how its intellectual property appears in user-created content.
